Hello, I'm writing my dissertation on horse culture in 17th and 18th century India and Iran. Really, I'm researching the cultural preferences of different ethnic groups - Rajputs, Persians, Afghans... I won't bore you yet. I've translated three Persian horse treatises from the period, written in India. They are incredibly interesting, but I'm really struggling with the relationship between markings and breeds. And how the color and breed preferences influenced the horse trade between Central Asia, the Persian Gulf, and India. I also have stud records from the East India Company's Pusa Stud in Bengal and the Padnalls stud near Essex. I have absolutely fallen in love with this topic. But as a historian without too much horse experience, it would be wonderful to have a conversation with horse people! Thank you! Monica

Can't speak for the time frame, but in mid/late 1970s Iran, males were kept intact unless it became a "medical" necessity to castrate them. My lesson horse over there was a late-gelded tribal-bred Arab that had been gelding to see if it would make him nicer after he killed one groom, took the thumb off another and squished a third bad enough to put him in hospital. Horse liked women tho'
