Appys with spots and dark legs

Re: Appys with spots and dark legs
Near leopard is just the term used for horses who are genetically leopard (noes to toes white with spots) but they have their pattern slightly suppressed from fully taking over their entire body, hence the darker legs and often darker faces. So they are 'near' leopard in their appearance ("not quite leopard" doesn't roll off the tongue as well :P). Same with near fewspots.
Re: Appys with spots and dark legs
A leopard (or near leopard, if you prefer) can have dark legs, but they usually have dark manes and tails as well. This is my old gal, Trixie.
Re: Appys with spots and dark legs
I am loving that mane with the black streak. :)
I think the movie painted the horses lower legs to help hide the feather extensions. Caddy Shack had a jumping stand in for a big feathered draft horse. It was pretty obviously a non draft horse double with a painted on blaze, tied tail and fake feathers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCCmbQlc…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Re: Appys with spots and dark legs
The Appaloosa with the dark legs is not a natural Appaloosa color. The legs have been spray painted black for effect. Note the right front leg and the spot above the knee. It is easy to see the spray.
I see horses in several breeds that allow spraying especially gray horses.

He looks like a Noriker.
look at the leg color of these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvEIAFfa…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (esp at 0:42)
Also, Norikers originate from alpine regions of Austria and Germany, and isn't that near where the movie is being filmed? Would make more sense than an App cross all the way over there!
Re: Appys with spots and dark legs
Oh that's interesting! Although the horse in the movie seems more of a light horse compared to the Norikers?
This one seems a bit heavy, although the markings and feather seem pretty much what the movie horse is!

Re: Appys with spots and dark legs
My bay leopard filly, Toby's Windsong, has partially dark legs.
Re: Appys with spots and dark legs
Too bad I don't have any adult photos of him, but I saw him last fall as a 5 y/o and he looks the same color-wise :)

Re: Appys with spots and dark legs
I know some near leopards can have dark legs but they aren't so dramatically solid.
You can see the near leopard further down this page has some pretty dark legs but he also has "lightning marks" down the pasterns
