Ummm... Thats not Slip Catch?

Ok, so I posted this in another forum, and realized that you guys probably know more about whats happening. :P My bad for not posting here first. So I've seen supposed baby pics of Slip Catch (one of Catch A Bird's classic roan foals) and pics of Slip Catch during and after being rescued from neglect. And now there are pics of a mare on All Breed Pedigree of a bay roan mare who does NOT have the same markings as the foal. Anyone know whats going on here? [img]http://i872.photobucket.com/albums/ab283/talkingmongo0se/Slip-Catch.jpg…] [img]http://i872.photobucket.com/albums/ab283/talkingmongo0se/3vua-4b.jpg[/i…] I also used to think that this horse was Slip Catch after being rescued from neglect from Nancy Tillbrook, but it can't be because the markings are off. Well, I will refrain from commenting on the last photo...still biting my tongue! :hammer :sad

I will say however, that it is obvious that those are pixs of 3 different horses - no 2 have the same markings...just remember, All Breed is what people post themselves, so accuracy can not be guaranteed

Those photos (of Slip Catch and the others) were sent from their current owner to a breeder with those names attached. Why those marking don't match IDK, though I have seen markings disappear on horses before.

accphotography Wed, 08/18/2010 - 22:58

I think the foal and the neglected horse could very likely be the same. The middle mare is definitely different but she may not be claimed to be Slip Catch at all.

RiddleMeThis Wed, 08/18/2010 - 23:03
The middle mare is definitely different but she may not be claimed to be Slip Catch at all.
Gwen says that mare IS Slip Catch. Whether shes wrong IDK, but thats what she says.

Threnody Wed, 08/18/2010 - 23:05

Yah, the last pic makes me sad/angry.

If you look at the leg markings they don't match. The foal has a white front, the rescue horse doesn't.

I'm trying to hunt down a lead ACC gave me on the TB Database website. Not having luck so far finding the original poster of the pics :(

But dangit I want to know. I found video of the mare being claimed to be Slip Catch on YouTube and have messaged the poster, but since they haven't been on recently (like, 7 months ago), I doubt I'll get a message back.

It bothers me because if she isn't the real Slip Catch, then the pedigrees of her foals are wrong, and the real Slip Catch is out there somewhere.

accphotography Wed, 08/18/2010 - 23:14

Ok on YouTube they have a video that they say is Slip Catch, but then they have a video they say is Lilac Hill (a DAUGHTER of Slip Catch) and they look like the very same horse to me... thoughts? Maybe they are both Lilac Hill.

Threnody Wed, 08/18/2010 - 23:20

They're different horses. These videos were taken at the same time. "Slip Catch" has a chestnut foal, while Lilac Hill has a bay foal. You can see Lilac Hill with her bay foal in the background of Slip Catch's video.

accphotography Wed, 08/18/2010 - 23:23

Whoa this is.... wacky. If that IS Slip Catch, who are the other two!?

Does the rescue horse match Lilac Hill maybe?

Have we seen another roan with a blaze?

Threnody Wed, 08/18/2010 - 23:30

I'm pretty sure the foal is Slip Catch. That pic used to be the official picture of her for years.

The rescue horse is likely a relative of some form. If it wasn't for the two solid front legs, while Slip Catch has 1 white front, I'd say they were the same horse.

The supposed "Slip Catch" I have no idea O.O' I look at her and think stock horse.

...

Or if we really wanted to get weird about things, Slip Catch's markings slowly disappeared over time. First the front, her large blaze slowly dissapearing, then her two hind fetlocks, and then her blaze turned into a small star! And the calls were coming from inside the house...

Ok I got carried away with the creepy story part, its late on the east coast >.<

Threnody Wed, 08/18/2010 - 23:35

This is a pic of the rescue horse's blaze, I assume it's Tillbrook's hand in the way of part of it.

[img]http://i872.photobucket.com/albums/ab28…]

It kind of looks like a reduced version of the foal's blaze, but to have a horse change markings THAT much? I know I brought up that conspiracy theory, but I don't think I believe it... Or at least I don't think I do... This is all too weird.

accphotography Thu, 08/19/2010 - 00:14

Well had you not said that about the socks I would say that ^ horse was definitely the same as the foal. We really need to get to the bottom of this.

Threnody Thu, 08/19/2010 - 10:08

Since none of the horses are the same one, it begs the question of where the real Slip Catch is, and if someone is trying to make money off of "Catch A Bird" horses, that are really just stock horse roans.

I know they do parentage testing for foals, but they need to do a parentage test a generation back for this girl.

EDIT: Since the mutation for CAB's roan doesn't show up on a roan test (because it has different markers) I think a simple Roan test may do the trick. If they come back positive for roan, they aren't CAB babies.

Although this makes sense if it is a new mutation I'm just curious how you know for sure?

Threnody Thu, 08/19/2010 - 12:58

Since CAB carried the first mutation of roan in TBs, they cannot have the same linked markers as the roan in stock horses and other breeds that share the same origin of their roan.

Different sources = different markers

If they have the same markers than that is a huge statistical improbability.

It's like how the Dun test only works for certain mutations of dun and not on all breeds. The markers are different.

TheRedHayflinger Fri, 08/20/2010 - 08:49

didn't CAB sire 4 roans? maybe some of the pics are of his other roan offspring. In fact..on one site I've seen that foal with mare picture that states the foal is Slip Catch..then right beside it is a picture of another, older foal named Odd Colors--both foals share the same markings.

One of the pics is mislabeled for sure..the markings match on these two, but they have two different names.

Threnody Fri, 08/20/2010 - 12:36

I always thought Odd Colours was a red roan. Looking at it now... Dang lighting.
I never noticed they had similar markings. I think you may be on to something. ^_^

Odd Colours is listed as a bay roan. I'm going to try and find pictures and info on the Dam named Out Of Season and see if she matches the mare in the Slip Catch baby pic.

Update: Well, momma Out of Season is a chestnut, but because of her name, finding pics and links that may pertain to her are proving difficult to locate. :-|

Since both Slip Catch and Odd Colours have chestnut dams more needs to be found out about their individual maternal parentage.

Hi ! Can I ask a really dumb qustion? Who on earth is slip catch? You all seem to know him so I can only presume he was a famous exracehorse or something??? Please fill me in on him briefly !lol!

Monsterpony Fri, 08/20/2010 - 17:40

Slip Catch is a mare out of Catch A Bird, who is a racehorse famous for a unique white brindle pattern. He was taken by a vet that tried to use him in a breeding experiment and ended up starving him and the offspring.

Threnody Mon, 08/23/2010 - 16:18

Lol! I have that page open in another tab as I just read your post! Thank you so much though ^_^

I got a response back from the jockey club, and it was the equivalent of a 404 error.

But, apparently according to the Australian studbook site CAB has been DNA typed and so has Slip Catch and her filly Lilac Hill. So genetically everything does check out tracing Lilac Hill though Slip Catch to Catch A Bird.

Lilac Hill

Odd Colours has not been DNA typed. And I still don't know who the rescued bay roan is.

I guess we can assume that it really is Slip Catch who just has the star and no leg markings. Funny to think this all occurred from a mislabeled picture. I would still like to get more info on this, and see if it is Odd Colours in the two baby pics. If only to straighten out who is who.

And since Slip Catch raced, I'm going to look around for any pics of her on the track.
