seedy toe?

Forums

So I got an awesome farrier out today! I called some of the fanciest barns in the area and asked who they used, and he was on all the list, and was the first to call me back lol. I explained that I really needed work done on the bottoms of their feet and flares fixed and that Nike is just over an abscess and Jazz has a bad crack, so he knew what to expect. Mom said Jazz was great for it, and that he was very good with the horses and did a great job, he has a fancy custom trailer with stuff for hot shoeing and whatnot, but we just got trimmed. He did say that Nike's front right (not the one that he abscessed on) looked like he might be getting seedy toe. He said we would watch it and such, but I don't know what we should do for it. Anybody deal with this before?

Seedy toe/white line disease is just a fancy term for a flare with crud in it. There's usually some bacteria and stuff since it's sort of like thrush in that the organisms get themselves into whatever anaerobic spot they can find and eat dead tissue but they're not the cause, just opportunists. As long as the hoof gets trimmed right and often enough though the hoof will begin growing unflared and that new growth should come down faster than the stuff can eat up. You can help kill whatever might be in there if you want but just be sure not to use something that can harm live tissue (NO bleach). As funny as it sounds Listerine is supposed to be good (I mean we put it in our mouths so I assume it's safe). It's better to soak in a solution than to pour directly so it gets into any deep areas.

Good to hear you found someone who's actually paying attention to the hooves!

Thanks! I told mom, she said we are gonna be sticking with this guy and keeping up a shorter trimming schedule until he gets all back to normal. I told her about the listerine, not sure if she'll do it or not at this point. But yeah, I am happy with this farrier from the sounds of him, though I wont get home to see for myself till friday. Hopefully Nike will be feeling well enough for some light riding! My little buddy Jamie really wants to ride him. She's so adorable, can't remember how old she is now, I want to say 12... She's so much fun, and she took really good care of Nike while he was lame, walked him all the time and gave him lots of carrots. She deserves to get on him for a little while.
