Splash in Hackney Horses

I ran across some pictures of a Hackney Pony named Heartland Blizzard. He looks splash to me, but what is the cause of the weird roany splotches? http://www.benttreefarm.net/Albums/Horses/Hackney/Royal08/Royal20087.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://www.benttreefarm.net/Albums/Horses/Hackney/Lexington09/Lexington…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://www.benttreefarm.net/Albums/Horses/Hackney/Lexington09/Lexington…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://www.benttreefarm.net/Albums/Horses/Hackney/Lexington09/Lexington…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Could there be some sort of restriction going on? He has an awfully small amount of face white for that body spot. I think that the white comes from his mom's side. Here's a sister of his mom: http://www.erosarabhacks.com/mares/halstead-s-american-tradition/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There would be a lot more face white for it to be splash putting that much on the belly. Splash is there though in the face. Maybe a dominant white or sabino?

lipigirl--i think that one is a Hackney Horse, not a Hackney pony.

I would guess sabino with splash...

I used to pass a farm when I worked at a Boy Scout camp and their sign said Hackney Horses and Hackney Ponies...until then I didn't realize there were Horses and Ponies both of the Hackney variety...I also used to pass a farm with a zebra out with a bunch of mares...and then the next year a bunch of half zebra babies were out there with them, as well as a wildebeest..lol

Doh! It is a Hackney Horse. It says so under the picture. Whoops! I was looking for the pony version and this farm does a lot with the ponies and I wasn't paying close enough attention. His sire is a pony, but mom is not. Unfortunately, I think he got the color from mom.

I've seen a bunch of Hackney Horses/Ponies that look really sabino-ish with the white going under the jaw and roaning and jagged edges and white creeping up the legs and giving belly spot, but this is the first one that looked splashy to me.

I liked the spots of solid color in the roaning. :)

Edit: I am having a seriously blonde posting spree. It's a mare... I have no clue how I didn't notice. Blizzard has a filly that is registered as a bay pinto and I'm going to try and find her.

Edit 2: Here's the daughter: Shelburne: http://www.benttreefarm.net/Albums/Hors…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; All's I can see as far as body white is that big splotch under her.

He is beautiful. Whats with the funky shoes he has on? Are they some kind of driving shoe. Excuse my ignorance I am totally novice to the driving grear

Third Peppermint Mon, 06/07/2010 - 08:20

I think that they're weighed to "improve" movement, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm sure someone else will know a lot more and I'm interested to find out.

Bannerminis Mon, 06/07/2010 - 15:43

Its very interesting as I have never seen that kind of shoeing before. The only different type of shoe I have seen was a racing shoe my boss used it was made from some sort of Aluminium and were feather light and he would put them on for racing and then take them off again as they wouldnt last a few days they were so light.

I see tobiano........
Well actually that was my first thought! Actually my thought was, if that was a shetland that would be tobi. But figured that wasn't possible, plus mare looked less tobi so went with splash!

Be interesting if it was tobi!

RiddleMeThis Mon, 06/07/2010 - 18:48

As strange as its going to sound TRHF, that actually looks DW to me, and that was my first combined thought about the Hackneys. Especially since IMO splash won't put that much body white on with just a stripe on the face. Though I DO think splash is there.

That was my first thought, but the more I looked, the less it seemed tobiano. The white is right where the tobi flank shield would be and the leg white is just not tobi enough. But I had that typed out first and then erased it.

Third Peppermint Mon, 06/07/2010 - 21:14

That's weird because I thought tobiano for a second, but it didn't look much like what I had associated with it. I think the spots on the side triggered it for me though.

Look at this interesting stallion I found. He's a relative of the other horses:

http://www.stallionsnow.com/stallion-ad…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I clicked on their farm ID and they have an interesting horse as their picture: http://www.stallionsnow.com/farm-id-121…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

More splashy body white, but minimal face white. I can't get the website to work thought...

I also scanned through these photos. (http://www.acrostudio.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; go to "Your Images" then click on National Hackney Show 2007) I haven't found an easier way to show specific images... Look at (if you can find them):

YC9A5062.jpg
YC9A5088.jpg, YC9A5132.jpg, YC9A5133.jpg
maybe YC9A5430.jpg

The registry info for this guy is interesting: http://hackney.select.net/registry.php?…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Third Peppermint Tue, 06/29/2010 - 15:49

I found a new one! Neither sire nor dam appears to have any body white, but the pictures weren't the best.

Scroll to Culliton Laddie

Going through his offspring in the Hackney registry I can find a bunch that have white markings on the belly or girth area. I'm considering recording this data since the descriptions are pretty good.. That would be so cool if it was new!

JNFerrigno Tue, 06/29/2010 - 17:58

What would make you think it's a new mutation instead of just minimal expression of what is already known?

White on hackneys isn't rare. Their markings always get passed off as being sabino, mainly because the white patterns you guys talk about in the form are not known to the common outside world.

This little fellow, http://jnferrigno.deviantart.com/art/Ha…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; used to be one of the saddle seat ponies at a farm I went to. He unfortunately died due to owner negligence. But his line all had the white legs and white on the head. I don't know what his registered show name was, but we had photos of him and his family on the show board at the barn.
