Going to the vet tomorrow...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPwvoku7H_4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Nike's doing something weird with his leg. I've not been home in a while, but mom said he's started lifting his leg, like jerking it up, and swinging it out. Like it's in pain. She thinks its his shoulder, she put DMSO on it and is taking him to the vet tomorrow. Now the last few times they've taken him to the vet it was serious, they don't go just for nothing. This is the same leg that he punctured his navicular bursa last summer. I'm really worried about him. Please, tell me your thoughts or reassure me or something...anything...

Wow. Interesting. Did she find any heat or swelling? Is she suspecting an abscess (just wondering about the soaking, although I can see she was hosing the whole area)? Is he walking on it?

Well I showed you earlier what the bottom of his feet look like, the sole looks terrible, but she is suspecting that this is in his shoulder. I think she said he was walking on it, though he hasnt been walking very much, mostly stays right by the stalls where he is fed. But is doing this strange leg jerking thing while he's standing there looking depressed. I think she DMSOed his whole leg, I'll have to ask her more tomorrow, they're already asleep now...

Boy it would seem like that move would make his shoulder hurt MORE... but who knows. They're odd that way. I hope it's not as bad as it might seem.

Since I am not there and can't actually do an exam, I can't make anything more than a guess on what the video shows. If it was a shoulder problem, I would expect to see him dangling his leg limply rather than moving it around. Horses with shoulder tend to minimize any movement of the shoulder. I would bet he more likely has an abscess or injury below the fetlock.

Dad texted me about Nike, mom just got done at the vet.

He said: “Nukie had a bad abcess. He drilled it with a drimmel tool, soaked it, packed it, and rewrapped it. He did a nerve block and gave mom enough bute for five days. He will be fine.”

I'm excited that that's all it is, good eye MP and ACC! We need a new farrier, for sure. I've never delt with an absess in my life and now I've had one on each horse this year! Ridiculous!! I need to do some research on what causes it. Anyways, I'm happy.

And Dad has all sorts of nicknames for Nike, he calls him Nucular, Noonkers, Noonkie, Manoonkie, etc. It's cute, haha. I usually just call him Tubby :P
Also, he is starting to loose some weight now that he's on his new diet! Jazz being in training is good for both of them!

Abscesses usually start with some sort of injury to the foot either a bruise or a small puncture. Because the hoof is so solid, when bacteria start to grow and the immune system kicks in, there is nowhere for the pus to drain. Thus it becomes a big painful spot under high pressure. If you don't cut an opening for the pus to drain, it will eventually either works its way through the hoof and burst out somewhere (usually the wall or the coronary band) or it can works its way into the joints/structures inside the hoof (BAD!).
