ApHC going to allow other breeds that show characteristics?

a friend of mine is on an appy mailing group and has been seeing some things today that she was telling me about, but I've been unable to find out any info. According to what she seen, if it goes through--any Thoroughbred, Arabian or Quarter Horse that shows characteristics can be submitted to the ApHC for registration, and per the registrars decision can get regular ApHC papers. on second note..I just found this on the ApHC site under Board of Directors: under Breeders Committee http://www.appaloosa.com/pdfs/2010_bod_BreedersCommitteeAgenda.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Breeders’ Committee Motion 02.02.09 o The Breeders’ Committee recommends Rules Committee and Board consideration of an additional to Rule 204 (204.4) that would read: On a case-by-case basis, horses registered with an approved breed association displaying i) an Appaloosa coat pattern or ii) Appaloosa mottled skin and one other Appaloosa characteristic may be considered for ApHC registration. Motion made by Jack Zuidema, seconded by Laura Lyon. Motion passed. **NOTE: this motion was tabled at the July 2009 meeting and requires coming back through committee

I can't imagine anything would get registered out of the TB or Arabian world...unless they count the mottling due to vitiligo of grey horses or striped hooves of white feet. QH does have a touch of appy hiding here and there (as seen with Reminic in Spots), but not much.

After I got to thinking about it, I had the same thought....what horses out there in the Appy or TB world show enough characteristics? I didn't recall seeing any.

And it does just say: "On a case-by-case basis, horses
registered with an approved breed association displaying..."

so...will that open it up to them adding in other breeds for approval--ones that include pattern or characteristics they strive for?

Actually, not RIS, his owners have expressed that they do not desire ApHC papers on him. However, RIS is not the only QH to obtain AQHA registration, sporting appaloosa patterning...the AQHA removal of their excessive white rule did not apply to just the 'crop-out' paints. From what I understand, there are at least 6 horses with appy patterning that have gotten AQHa papers since the removal of the white rule.

BTW, any motion passed in the March meeting concerning this does have to also pass the July meeting, and elections for new directors is between these two meetings. So those who are up for re-election need to think carefully about their decisions. It's been proven, and relatively recently, that the membership does not have a problem with voting out someone who voted against the constituency's wishes.
So much for all that about the Appaloosa being a breed!!!
Do they still have those scrawny, jug-headed, rat-tailed specimens, that I saw so commonly 50 years ago, hidden away somewhere? They didn't produce the Appaloosas I see today by breeding those to each other. The Indians that bred those horses 150-200 years ago cared about nothing more than color.

I have not followed the developments of the breed within my lifetime, because I simply hated what I saw as a horse-crazy teenager, but the influence of QH and Arab is obvious when you compare today's Apps to the examples of 50 years ago.

My appologies to those of you who raise and love Apps. I KNOW you have some fine horses now. For me, it's kind of like when you get sick eating something and you never want to see it again.

Please don't ban me from the forum. I'll try to be nice from now on.

Same with those flaming Pintos, eh, Freeland??
I love the pattern, but I am not a lover of the "breed" it's a bit like Minis, I fear, anything you want so long as it is the right size/ has pattern.....oh, no wait, you can have solid Appies!!!!
So, what is the point of allowing anything else to join the club?
Are they hoping to "upgrade" cos I think we all know how well that usually goes.....

Well you've been able to "hardship" register Apps of unknown decent for a while now (maybe forever?) but they have to be gelded or spayed first. So I suppose this is just adding more outside blood, why its needed when you can cross onto TB, QHs, and Arabs already IDK.

OUCH Jane! That cuts to the quick.

But, you are of course right. And you know as well as anyone how much I like a wildly marked Pinto. But I do recognize that some breeders use some extremely poor specimens for breeding stock. I saw an ad just today for a Pinto colt that was being advertised as a potential herd sire. Well marked, but his head made me cringe. (At least he had a tail though. :rofl )

It is true, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

There are a few of the terrible ones still around here, not doing their breed any justice. Diane gave me a talking to the first time I said something about them lol, but I am better for it because now I realize they aren't bad now, there are some gorgeous ones out there. They still aren't at the top of my list for potential horses, but they aren't nearly as far down as they were. Of course I also swore up and down I'd NEVER own a TB, and not only did I buy one, but I bred her!

:D @ Krickette. Yep, just like any breed, there are the good, the bad and the uglies in apps. And, soon it will be the "pearl" horses and the "champagnes" turn, as people who shouldn't be allowed to breed Breyers end up with a colt or filly with the colour, and ignore the fact that the horse's tail grows from the nose, and there's a fifth leg coming up from the withers, and put it to reproductive duty "cuz it's soooo purty!".

No, wasn't there, cuz I , don't read FHOTD...to me, her constant use of a sledgehammer, when it isn't always warranted, not to mention her language, are a major put-off. I know of at least one instance where she was wrong (never heard of a retraction by her on that one), and a more recent instance was on something that took place over 6 years ago...having been targetted by people with no facts, doctored photos, and what I can only guess was extreme jealousy, I can't find what she does to be actually helpful. I'm not into inciting emotional outbursts.

Back to the origin of the word, however, I know several people who do follow this woman, and it could easily have been from one of them.
