Re: good lord that's a big dog!
I dunno about the "bigger" in danes causing them to last only 6 or 7 years, at least as being a new thing...my aunt used to breed danes back before she had kids (and that's now more than 50 years ago), and that was one of the reasons to cause her to get out of it, the fact that danes only lived for around 7 years (average lifespan, ignoring the exceptions that people can always seem to find. LOL)

My aunt had one that lived to be about 10 I think, but she ended up killing him. My mom and I were babysitting him and took him to be put down, she had given him all sorts of medication and he got stomach ulcers and terrible things. He was in pitiful shape. But he was a sweetheart of a dog. He used to play with the cats and fleabite them and cuddle up to them.
Re: good lord that's a big dog!
We have had three of our danes live past 10 and 2 of them into the 12 years old. We have one other old lady that is past 8 years old and is going strong. I would expect her to live an other few years atleast. But I am sure for everyone that has lived a long life there is an other that did not.
I would be interested in looking at what the danes are eatting, bloodlines, health (are they fit?) that sorta thing.
Re: good lord that's a big dog!
Mine are always rescues (then I adopt), so I never know bloodlines, but they eat Natural Balance. One had cancer and one had the enlarged heart. Well bred danes now commonly live 10-12 years and some breeders guarantee it. I think there are some good dane breeders around the US now. If I were to ever buy from a breeder Adelle, the 10-12 year lifespan is most definitely appealing!

And as big as he is, he still doesn't hold the Genuis Record as that goes to an English Mastiff named Zorba. Zorba weighted 343 pounds (156 kg), stood 37 inches (94 cm) at the shoulder and was 8.25' (251 cm) from tip of nose to tip of tail.
That is the one thing I am dreading about Abby - knowing her lifespan is going to be so much shorter than what I am used to with my other breeds :sad (had a Bichon that lived to be 17 and mom had a black lab that was just shy of 19). Even taking into account her Am. Bulldog blood (not that there is much of it) her life expectation is less than 10 with 6-8 being "normal".
Oh and the latest pixs of Abby...she & Tank are at 19 weeks in these photos

He does hold the record for height. George is 42.625 inches at the shoulder.
Re: good lord that's a big dog!
That is a lovely dog but this is where I start getting cross because in the US they are breeding Danes SO large that they are dying by age 6-7 because thier heart can't cope with pumping blood round such a large animal - so that bit is very sad. :sad
