Is this a true statement?
extension red factor:e/e (red based)
agouti A/A homozygous dominant ofr agouti so will never produce a foal that is any variant of black. only bay.
If this is true is it possible to have A/a so agouti is only passed 50/50?
Probably seems really kindergarten but don't know.
thank you
Okay, with agouti, it goes like this...EE aa or Ee aa will be black; Ee A/a, Ee A/A, EE A/A or EE A/a is bay. Agouti does not show on red or ee a/a, ee A/A or ee A/a will all appear the same - chestnut.
Yes you can have an A/a with agouti only passing 50% of the time...but both sire and dam need to be tested to assess the agouti standing of each as both can pass it to the foal. I have met a lot of people that believe that only blacks carry agouti and therefore can only pass it on to the foal ... and we know this is not true.

Gosh that sounds exactly like my description of Lace.
Yes, it means that horse will NEVER have a black, smokey black, grullo/a, classic champagne, etc. No black bases without agouti whatsoever. In other words, ONLY bay bases... bay, buckskin, bay dun, amber champagne, etc.
By the same token, if the results were Aa instead, 50% of the foals (when bred to an EE aa) could be bay and 50% black.
aa would mean could only produce black foals (to an EE aa).
Whoa, that is a little bit confusing.....Bay is a "black based" colour, after all!!!! :booty

That was my thought, too, since a black-based foal (E) could come from the other genetic contributor. It may be less confusing to say all black-based foals out-of/by an AA horse will always be a variant of bay and will never be black in visual color.
I understand. It's hard to get that point across sadly. I tweaked it.
That's better :flower

Ok, it just means that if that mare has a black based foal it will also have bay.
Gotcha.
