Another spotty question!

Im delighted to introduce "Slaneyrose Jewel of Shishone" A silver pintaloosa filly, 19" at a week old. She has a beautiful blanket spot but is it the rule of thumb that a blanket on a baby always spreads to become a near leopard pattern?? Congtrats Kim...very nice! I am no expert on Appy's but I do know that not all blankets get larger from birth so yours may stay the same.

slaneyrose Fri, 10/02/2009 - 08:25

Hi Amanda!! :salute:

Thanks for the info...hope you are right, her dam`s one hasnt spread any since her birth so here hopin..... I just love those blankets lol :ymhug: How things with you, good? @};-

rabbitsfizz Fri, 10/02/2009 - 13:24

Her dam isn't near leopard, she's blanket, so, yeas baby could stay blanket...she has a very slight, almost minimal marking at the moment, which I would think will spread to form a blanket, it doesn't always, but it would not preclude her having appy babies even if it were to stay as it is.
For the record, I have never seen a near leopard Pintaloosa, as the spots are only present on the dark bits so if the dark bits varnished out you would have a white horse with irregular spots on it's body!!

Oh, hang on there is oneI know of, I had better try to be polite here as it is a pretty dire animal, but a spotted society registered it, a Pintaloosa, as a "visual Fewspot" and I have NO idea what that means except that it was, visually, a white horse with a few spots!!!!!

It would be a shame if this filly went NL as you would lose all the Silver, visually, at least, and she is well marked.

Rule of thumb is appy colour never does what you think it will. :rofl Seriously, tho', no, it isn't a rule of thumb that blankets will expand. Some appies roan a lot, fast, some don't seem to roan at all. Black seems to be an inhibitor, red seems to allow for louder expression.

This filly obviously has other patterns going on--how much they will help her blanket express farther is still up for grabs.

This is DC, for example, he is at present, and extended Blanket.
He could stay Blanket, as his sire is a Blanket Pintaloosa, but visually I can see form his varnish and the patches on his shoulders, that he will varnish out and be a visual Near Leopard, which is a shame as they are ten a penny and he looks stunning the pattern he is now!!
He will obviously still be a Blanket, though, he will just be a visual near Leopard.

critterkeeper Sat, 10/03/2009 - 10:02

What a stunning filly Slaneyrose...she's quite lovely. :flower I vote for keeping her blanket - I love that belted "Holstein" look... :love

Oh, Rabbit, I hope he doesn't varnish out :o - he is such a stunning blanket, it'd be a real shame to lose all that color.

rabbitsfizz Sat, 10/03/2009 - 11:39

Well, DC had no more pattern on him at birth than Slaney's filly, just a few spots on his bum!
I am afraid he will varnish, he has the pattern form his sire who is now white all over, and who we even thought mightbe a snowcap, as he never had any spots on his blanket, but he has one foal form way back that was not visually spotted, might be now, though.
Flipping Ada I wish the Appy Project people would get their fingers out, all this time, all these arguments, and not one, tiny, little, test !
PLEASE do not tell me there is one "on the horizon" either, as they said that ten years ago!!!
Just a few people doing exactly what we do, educated guesses, and making up an entirely new vocabulary as they go along.
Frustrated...what me????

RF, we need that soapbox smilie - :rofl Of course we need the ones deactivated during the switch reactivated (like the first one - smilie 1 that we use all the time).

slaneyrose Sun, 10/04/2009 - 08:55

I really like him too, he is VERY nice....and then his colour and blanket with those huge spots!! What a shame he will varnish out but I DID learn something (always makes my day! :bounce :toast ) a horse can be genitically a blanket spot, and so pass it on, and be visually something else! Thanks rf and everyone.

Critterkeeper, thank you soooo much for your compliments on my filly, someone tried to get me to sell her yesterday when she came to buy another horse lol and she DEFINITELY isnt for sale at this time. :rofl :D

DC is by Alamo (who is, unfortunately by a dwarf) O/O Dido, who is by Apollo (WC Adonis/ LF Kachina Doll) out of the real Fizz who is by TH Elfisio O/O SP Crystal Song, so all my breeding on the dam side, AMHA reg all the way back, and Dutch on the sire side.
DC is 29" at 18 months, I think he will grow on to around 32-ish, as he is a first foal.
I think I shall maybe put Fizz to him next year and see what I get. I have a weather eye on the fact that he could throw a dwarf, and I am really really hoping that John Eberth has a test out soon!
I may well geld him anyway, and drive him.

lipigirl Sun, 10/04/2009 - 16:05

Alamo a dwarf foal !!!! :rofl now that is entertaining being the lectures Wendy gives....sorry.

I love Apollo - I handled him at Wendy's very nice stallion and met Alamo then and actually did not like him very much but your boy is very nice Fizz and yes I hope for your sake you do not get a dwarf either.

rabbitsfizz Mon, 10/05/2009 - 14:03

NOT for general publication, Amanda (see I'm using your Sunday best name, this is srs bznz!! :booty )
That was said in confidence (HAH!! On the Internet :rofl ) and no, not a dwarf foal, his sireis a Dwarf!!!
That is also something not generally accepted, although I have actually told Janice that myself, so it is no secret (and Liz Seymour told her too.)

I am in two minds about using him at all, I shall keep him entire a little longer and see what comes up.

The King may die.

Or the horse may talk

lipigirl Mon, 10/05/2009 - 15:20

Sorry it's just that Wendy can be so high and mighty but don't worry I'm not involved with the show breeding scene anymore ! ;) ...and yes I know Alamo is not a dwarf !

rabbitsfizz Tue, 10/06/2009 - 15:04

Sorry, we are at cross purposes.
Alamo is not a dwarf.
Alamo has not sired a dwarf.
ALAMOS sire is a dwarf.

Y/N????
