What would you say?

accphotography Thu, 07/16/2009 - 20:57

It's odd. A friend showed me the photo of her clipped without telling me it was her (and I didn't recognize her). I first thought "black silver" and then before that even came out of my mouth my mind said "actually that could be palomino". So apparently I'm still on the fence with her.

I want to see accurate test results.

rabbitsfizz Fri, 07/17/2009 - 03:58

I agree testing is the only way to go on this one as there are so many colours that she could be, if she were Red Dun I would have expected her body colour to be creamier (have I ever mentioned how much I hate clipping foals.....WHY???? what is the point???? UGH!!) OK rant over :rofl
From the pictures she could be Palomino, but I do not think so.
She could also be Silver Black, and I am uncertain about that one, myself.

I clipped a foal once. I clipped Splash, my mini, because it was insanely hot outside and she wasn't shedding and was miserable. In fact I think the first 3 suimmers we had her we had to clip her because she wasn't shedding out enough. Then one day she magically learned to shed!

rabbitsfizz Fri, 07/17/2009 - 12:17

See, now that is exactly when I would not clip.
We do not often have insanely hot, but we did have one summer about eight years ago when it was up in the hundreds every day and I watched my foals carefully to see how they coped.
If they had been clipped I am pretty sure they would have got sunstroke, they need the coat as protection.
They shed off all the way round and just left themselves a "blanket" of fairly deep fur across the top line where they needed it.
When you clip you take away form the animal the ability to limit their own body heat, when you leave them to strip it out themselves they adapt.

Maigray Fri, 07/17/2009 - 14:15

The difference is probably in your locations. The high humidity in southern U.S. locations combined with the high heat can be very dangerous. A heat index over 150 will compromise the horse's ability to cope naturally, and a heat index over 180 is dangerous.

Dang it! I just wrote a bunch of stuff here and I lost it when I hit the preview button to make sure the pictures worked. Oh well! I haven't been able to send any test results to animal genetics. All of my extra money is going to a big mare that I bought back in March. i had sold her 3 years ago and found her for sale. She was starved and ridden to the ground and it's taking alot of money to get her weight back up, ex-rays etc. Shelterwood, (no I will NEVER use them again) still does NOT have my Cream information yet! So far they have Red EE, TobiT+, Silver+-, Champaign neg, Sabino neg. Now, does anybody know whats up with the modeled skin in the pictures? Do you see the different shades on her skin? Is this weird or normal? The darker skin color seems to be the same as the little spots inside the big spot on her left side.

I've never seen anything like that. This little girl is a mystery to me (and I'm still not convinced of those results, ).

Daylene Alford Tue, 07/28/2009 - 11:27

Especially along the edges of white patterns that have roaning or haloing, the same affect that appears in the coat can also appear in the skin. It "could" be caused by something else but I prefer to think that the most common reason is the most likely the correct one.

accphotography Tue, 07/28/2009 - 13:12

The skin I could see, but she is marbled completely different colors over all of her back. Do you see that admin?

lipigirl Tue, 07/28/2009 - 14:38

I think I get what Admin is saying, the marbling is caused possibly by the roaning of the skin - My mini boy has it caused in his case by sabino.

luv2ridesaddleseat Tue, 07/28/2009 - 15:41

She is negative for sabino. Her baby coat all grew in the same color over the different colored skin. I assume, her adult coat will also?

luv2ridesaddleseat Tue, 07/28/2009 - 16:56

Duh! I forgot about that. I suppose at this point, I should be more concerned with a name for the dear filly, instead of wondering about her color so much! I'm lousy with names! :BH

CMhorses Tue, 07/28/2009 - 20:55

Peaches N Cream, I really like the name peach for her, even for a horse thats not cream or chestnut, it just sounds cute.
Whats her dam and sires names?

luv2ridesaddleseat Tue, 07/28/2009 - 21:59

It's funny you mentioned Peaches and Cream. If she stayed palomino, thats what I was going to name her! Her Dams name is K Hidden Shadows Fortune Cookie, her Sires name is TMBAS Avalanche Joe.

Thanks!

Joyce

HEY your filly has a white (or whitish) dorsal strip like my pali filly. Kewl. I thought it was so weird to see one that color, unfortunately Goldie's is countershading and is disappearing as quickly as it arrived... :BH

According to those results she is a homozygous black, hetero tobi & silver. Somehow, I just don't see that either, but we have been wrong in the past (which is why we stress getting them tested... :bounce ).

accphotography Thu, 07/30/2009 - 18:43

If I trusted Shelterwood I would just say I was wrong... I just don't feel like I can trust them now sadly

luv2ridesaddleseat Fri, 07/31/2009 - 05:58

The white dorsal is kind of cool! I assume it will go away also. It turns to brown going into her tail.

I would never trust Shelterwood either. :( They STILL don't have the cream results! What kind of a place is this?? Rediculous for sure!

Dilutes Fri, 07/31/2009 - 07:48

Stupid me never got around to taking a photo of our silver palomino (tested for once copy of silver. He's also basically white in colour). He was six months old and we hadn't had him long. We gave him a much needed bath and discovered he had a big patch of black skin on his rump. It took up almost half of it. The rest of the skin was pink with some mottling. Over several weeks/couple of months, it got smaller and disappeared. He still has a lot of pink skin with mottling on him though. When he had the obvious black marked skin, only obvious when wet, he was white in hair colour all over.

Perhaps it's something to do with silver? Though you wouldn't think it would affect my boy who is red based. It's the only thing our horses have in common, hence me wondering

critterkeeper Fri, 07/31/2009 - 08:03

All I know about my Goldie is that she is palomino - and looks to be shedding out real dark (sooty looking - neither parent looks sooty, but who knows what Luna is hiding - lol) but I figure she will shed out a nice deep gold on her yearling shed.

Even though silver doesn't show on red, I'm wondering if it will show up on the cream thus modifying how it displays...kinda piggy backing like a dun and cream or dun and champaign alter the color. Does that make sense?

Dilutes Fri, 07/31/2009 - 08:24

Kinda, I'm still learning lol.

See how this pally has the black around the eye and black eye liner? Well black or dark grey :).

http://www.ichregistry.com/images/chick…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Well Saxon (He's 20 months old now) has grey/pink mottling eye liner and grey around the eyes. I know they generally call this pumpkin skin on pallys, if I'm right? It's just that he has no black or near black colour. To me his grey skin, looks diluted.

I thought it might be interesting, so I'm sending Hoofpick some hair samples. I will get around to getting him tested, just I have endless bills to pay arghhhh.

rabbitsfizz Fri, 07/31/2009 - 10:12

White dorsals....there is a thread on LB at the mo concerning this....poster says they are common on her Sabinos????

luv2ridesaddleseat Fri, 07/31/2009 - 10:52

I saw that, it's my thread of course! I need to read some great info on Sabino! I'm pretty new to all this color stuff, but I'm learning alot. Now to go find info on sabino. :-?

the easy definition of sabino: if it's white and cannot be otherwise explained, it is sabino.
meet the sabino scapegoat:
