Red Factor

I was playing around with the color calculator to see what percent chance my filly had of being black (apparently 100% since she is black :D). Her sire is bay, and has had chestnut get. So does that mean he's a red carrier?

Yes, it does mean he is a red carrier. What color was the dam and what has she produced?

She's a bay, and this is her first foal, so the only thing I know about her is that she's not homozygous for agouti. ;)

Well assuming she is heterozygous for black as well, you had a 18.75% chance of a black. If she is homozygous black you had a 25% chance of black. Talk about lucky. Some breed a homozygous black, heterozygous agouti to a black and get a bay every time. :laugh1

So the color calculator must be wrong then? Because when I do it it comes out that Jette had a 5.47% chance of being black. That's putting that the mares genetics are unknown.

The color calculator is kinda nuts. Unless you give it the EXACT genetics, it will give you numbers that are probably not possible. It takes into account that you don't know the mare's genetics and it averages the possibilities given that. It's assuming there is a possibility one or both parents could be homozygous for agouti, but we know they are not.

What are you feeding into it? I'm not even sure how it got the numbers it got even taking the unknowns into account.

Obviously I'm putting in that both dam and sire are bay. For the sire, I put in that he was a red carrier. I didn't think about this before, but would he be heterozygous for agouti? I'm clueless about genetics. I hadn't put that in before.

For the dam, I did both of the red factor and agouti as unknown, though she would be heterozygous for agouti as well, right?

The sire and dam would be heterozygous for agouti, but the dams red factor is unknown unless you know what color her parents are.

Sire is brown, and dam is bay.
