I photographed a gorgeous! Oldenburg colt last year who was wonderfully spotted. His dam is beautifully spotted and sire is a handsome pinto as well.
The colt's registered through the Pinto Horse Association but not the Paint Horse Assn., so I looked at the Paint Horse Association rules. It seems at least one parent must be registered with the American Paint Horse Association in order for a foal to be a registered Paint.
The Paint Horse Association seems to have started up in the mid-1960s, so it's a fairly young registry (not dealing with many thousands of pedigrees from the 1800s on, for instance). It seems the Pinto Horse Association might be a bit less restrictive (?).
Is one registry considered 'better' than the other, or is it apples and oranges? (or, for that matter, oranges and oranges)? Thanks for any thoughts! (I'm not writing about it or anything...just curious) ;)

PtHA will register a solid, even if the pedigree is unknown. Basically PtHA will register anything under the sun as long as it's not a draft a mule or an appaloosa patterned. For that reason there is little to no prestige to own a PtHA registered horse. It is a "color registry" and is not well respected as a whole. Paint on the other hand is a recognized and respected breed by nearly all horse owners.

APHA the Paint horse association has specific breeds only. Basically they are pinto patterned Quarter horses and Thoroughbreds. One parent has to be registered Paint and the other a registered Paint, Thoroughbred, or Quarter horse.
PtHA the Pinto horse association has divisions, pony, stock horse, gaited,etc. They register horses with pinto patterns from all breeds except draft breeds and mules.
With the PtHA I believe if the stallion is a registered horse the mare can be grade as long as the resulting foal has at least one of the pinto patterns and meets there minimum white requirements.
What I do not know about the PtHA is if they register any solid foals out of Pinto patterned parents. Where as APHA will register solid foals as long as they have one registered Paint parent.
