ventral edema

Forums

has anyone ever dealt with ventral edema in a non pregnant mare? our new lady has a big ole patch of it. I would have thought bug bites or something, but its not on the mid line. It seems to be running from her udder to about mid way towards her elbow and is about 3-4 inches wide and it feels firm. she has no swelling anywhere else and seems to be 'normal' (eating, drinking ect) but since we've only had her 5 days, i don't really know what her normal is. Obviously i have a call into the vet, but she is out on call and will give me a call back later when she gets back to the office. any ideas? i don't like odd things when they are in such poor condition!

Lacy has something very similar. I thought it was an allergy but it hasn't gone away. I had the vet look at it last time she was out and she it was nothing to be concerned about. *shrug* I do trust this vet, but I would like more info. Lacy's odd though in that she is always lactating at least a little so that could have something to do with it. She also always has a little pouch in front of her udder. This is the first time she's had the line up to her elbow though.

yes the vet got back to me and said if it was systemic it would be on both sides or join right up to her udder and that it is probably a bee sting or bug bite. it looked a bit smaller tonight, so i will just keep an eye on it :)

Does it look as though your mare has foaled any time recently? Can you express any milk? Just curious.

ACC I have a mare who always lactates as well, by the way, but she does not have edema.

Oh you just posted but I'm going to post this anyway.

she has had foals, but i would say last year at the most recent. even if she foaled in January i think her bag would still be bigger then it is now. The mare i am borrowing from adell has a bag with milk, but hasn't had a foal since last year. she was even dripping milk a bit last week, but no baby :(

Our mares edema seems to have come down since yesterday so hopefully it won't be back.
