Hey Rusti Welcome! Where abouts in Southeast Oklahoma? My dad lives about 20 miles east of Idabel and my husbands folks live just south of Idabel.

Welcome from NE TX.
Feel free to spam us with pictures. Noticed elsewhere you had a new colt but the mare is hard to see in there. ;)

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes! I'm in Heavener, which is in very southern LeFlore County, near the AR border. Ask and you shall recieve, here are pics of the horses, this fella came first, he is Azeem, 18 year old purebred bay Arabian gelding with a blaze and 2 white right socks (he is an oddball haha). He's been my main trail/cow horse for the past 3 1/2 years and will retire to being ridden by my 6 year old stepson as soon as my Mustang mare's baby is weaned off this fall.

Next is my boyfriend's mare Red, she is Sorrel Sabino (has a long blaze that goes all the way under her chin, rear white stockings and Sabino roaning on her entire body). I think she's about 13, breed is unknown, but we were told by the man we bought her from that she is half Arabian, I'm not sure what I think. A farrier who had never seen her before once assumed she was a Mustang but I don't think so. I think she has some Standardbred or Saddlebred in her. I don't have many good pics of her.

And finally Chilli, my Spanish Mustang mare, she is just 4 this spring. Sorrel Tobiano/Sabino Medicine Hat with brown eyes. She's been "off the mountain" about a year (she was running with the Blackjack Mountain horses in Oklahoma that Gilbert Jones handed down to Bryant Rickman...she's a descendant of Hidalgo). I bought her in September of 08 and was riding her on trails after 3 weeks. Then discovered she was pregnant in December of 08 and she's been a lady of leisure since then. On May 11th she had her colt.

I know right where Heavener is we drive through there on our way to visit the grandparents! We stop by the rune stone once a year or so. We live about 30 miles north of Fort Smith.

Great pics of your horses thanks for sharing!

Welcome Randi - love the great pixs. Your grade mare looks a lot like my foundation bred QHs - lol and we all know a lot of mustangs are actually decended from QHs and vice versa - :laugh1.

I am Kylene and I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains just off the "Parkway" in NC (just below the Va. line). I have 9 horses at the moment, 8 QHs (a 6 wk old pali filly, 3 sorrel w/sabino mares and a gelding; a sorrel w/splash filly; a bay with sabino mare; a cremello stud) and a bay splash/sabino/frame Paint mare. Speaking of horses, if I don't go feed my herd lunch they will be knocking on the door demanding my attention :whip ...and my porch is too small for that many large animals (besides the cats would protest... :hammer ). :laugh1

Welcome! I'm in NE Oklahoma north of Tulsa
is that one of the mustangs that they had to find homes for a while back? I like her face. Anyone with me on seeing Frame, possibly Tobiano?

Rusti Mon, 06/01/2009 - 12:56

Yup Chilli was part of the herd dispersal they are currently doing, and yes she has tobiano, something to do with the way she has color and white crossing her back...? Correct me if I'm wrong on that. Anybody know what causes the brown wraps on her back legs?

As far as Mustangs being descended from QH's...the herd she came from is pure and has no domestic influence. Gilbert Jones and Bryant Rickman have made sure of that. If any of you have a few spare hours, here's a very nice (but long) timeline [url]http://www.sino-platonic.org/complete/s…].

Now Red on the other hand, if she had come from a BLM roundup (BLM mustangs are different than Spanish Mustangs and do run the risk of domestic influence) then she could have QH in her but she has no freeze brand. So she remains a mystery lol. And also she is very FAT in that picture. Normally she is a slender girl with tons of shoulder and not much rump. She is gaited like a TWH but it's hard to get her to stay in it. However, she has no problem doing it in the pasture, while going away from me, while I'm trying to catch her lol. I will try and get some newer better pictures of her.

ditto

leave it to a horse with that much pinto patterns to have a solid foal :laugh1

The tobi I see in the hat, chest and flank shileds, very typical and all the white on the back without anything that really looks like splashed white (the other one that can cross the back). Frame I see in the dark on the legs with that much white on the body (all other patterns make white legs, frame prefers dark) very suspicious of frame, right eye wouldn't happen to be blue?

critterkeeper Mon, 06/01/2009 - 15:55

Okay so maybe no QHs - but I wasn't referring to your pinto mustang, but to the red mare :rofl (the one your vet though was possibly Mustang?). And I apologize for getting your name wrong on my first post, Rusti (I was on the phone all morning with hubby as he is have logistics issues with his load).

I do know that mustangs (even those that were isolated like your pinto mare) are decended from Spanish horses and so are PR Pasos, Paso Finos and Peruvian Pasos (all 3 with a run-walk similar to that of the TWH). That your mare has this ability is not really a surprise, just an added bonus. :love

As for your mare's legs, from the outline of her color patches and the way the red displays on her hind legs, I'd guess frame is the culprit. Frame isn't a given, but I'd sure test her before breeding her again (if that is your intention) just in case. As I stated, I have a splash/sabino/frame mare that has a georgous pattern and when I breed her, I am hoping for a nice frame foal (and all 3 patterns would be a big bonus).

That's ok about the name booboo, no big deal, better to be called the wrong name than be called a man lol. I doubt I will breed her again. I didn't know she was bred when I bought her and wasn't prepared for a foal but luckily I had 5 months to get ready. If I do decide to breed her I will have her tested for all the stuff and try and find a Spanish Mustang stallion that I can get a Grullo or Blue Roan out of her with. That will be years down the road though...I have my hands very full. One foal, 3 horses, 24 cows, 16 calves, 5 cats (4 of them in the house), 3 dogs and a 6 year old stepson is enough for me to handle at the moment (boyfriend works full time...owns his own car audio business in Fort Smith, AR...he might as well sign the farm over to me LOL).
