What do you think of Nellie?

This is moms riding mare. She has done Eventing with her, dressage, and jumping. She is a 7 years old TB. She was gotten from a rescue and was dead lame when we got her. Mom had her feet checked out and found out that she had an infection in the white line. A few months later she was started undersaddle and 6 months after that she was at her 1st show. We have grand plans for her, and we will see how they go after this weekend - I will tell you when I can. :D I am not 100% happy with the photos... but we needed them to show white markings... and they are not THAT bad. Overall I like her quite a bit. There are just a few things that stand out to me.

1: She has a very steep croup, especially for a Thoroughbred.
2: Her tail set seems high (but that's a nitpicky thing).
3: Her loin is pretty long.
4: I suspect she's a bit over at the knee (I'd need to see a square shot to confirm, but I'm pretty certain).

Each person has a slightly different opinion of those problems and thus the overall opinion of the mare varies.

She's cute! Glad to here she's been so good for your mom!

Is it just the photo or is she a little roached backed on the second pic - it's her back I am a little worried about - have you had it checked out?...am probably being silly but had to ask ?

critterkeeper Thu, 05/28/2009 - 16:03

Lipi, I am with you about her back, and also think it should be checked out. :bounce ACC I agree about her being over at the knee and the loin. Her croup may be a bit steep, but nothing to send her packing over -

Overall, though, I happen to like this mare and think it would be possible to get some really NICE foals from her with the right stallion. :flower I wonder what Cando has planned for next year... :love

I'm going to disagree about her being over at the knee -- and if she is it is slight, and I would bet it is from early race training.

There is a possible back issue but it looks to me like something chiropractic could sort out.

I am going to see about an other set of photos this weekend. I will post if I get them.

Nellie has had two foals todate. One was sired by a son of Rio Grande, we called him Father Time but his other name is Rio Blueprint (CSH /Hanoverian) I will dig up a photo of him. Then last year she foaled out Voodoo sired by Cando. I know I don't have any really nice photos of him... but really he looks like a mini Nellie, but black.

That photo was taken about this time last year. From all accounts he is looking better everyday. She has barn mates that want us to let them know if we do this cross again... and maybe. But for the most part mom wants to ride Nellie and not breed her (that is what the other mares are for :D )

voodoo doesn't look so bad he cant go up on here! he's just got a wee bit of sun blached winter hair left HMPH! poor voodoo....he is so flipping smart! i can now hold and PICK OUT his feet while he is loose in his stall on our 4th try EVER picking up his feet. he's gonna be slick soon and then people will be tripping over themselves to get their hands on that smart, great moving guy.
You're very right about him looking just like her. I see the same things in him that I saw in her.
Yuppers. Cookie cutter.

Sorta along those lines, Jen says she can only see Cando in the foals that he has given the Frame gene to...

all that sass Fri, 05/29/2009 - 04:39

yeah, cando STAMPS his frame foals! like big time. i think we need a thread for my observation amie with lots of pics!

i like voodoo, he has substantial bone for his age, a good brain and a nice way of going. i think he could be a teenagers first project horse, he is that easy. I seem to recall both his dam and sire took to things pretty easily when we started their groundwork, maybe voodoo got a double dose of smarty-pants. (i think i like him too much...that's dangerous)

waiting for amie! c'mon Amie!!!!!
I am here.

Today we took Nellie to a Canadian Sport Horse mare inspection and she did WONDERFUL! She got Second Premium status. We will get in the mail in a few days the full break down of the marks (I was too busy listening to write them down :hammer ) but she did really really well! She got top marks for her trot. People where "awwww"ing when she was trotting around! The mares are inspected by breed standard and the judge will tell everyone there how they did. They start at the front (face and neck) and work down to size and shape of feet. Nellie, was a bit smaller then they normally want (she is 15.2 and they want 16hh) but her conformation and movement made up for the extra 2 inches. Mom is over the moon!

Yes I have photos, yes I will post.

all that sass Sun, 05/31/2009 - 18:30

i am looking forward to pics! i heard a super high mark for her trot....hope it is what i heard it is!!!!! i wasn't there :(

Adell Sun, 05/31/2009 - 18:38

I didn't take this photo, but my good friend Pat did and she was even faster loading the photo onto her computer then me... so I thought I would use her photo.

When I have a bit more time (I hope tomorrow) I will load up my photos and see if there are a few of mine that I like. Then I will share those as well.

Nope I didn't get any of mom in the arena, it was at Ashlands and you know what the arena is like there to get photos in. They did have a pro in so I am sure she got some nice shots that we can buy.
