interesting dunalino?

Sorry, I dont have recent close up pics, just a video of him when my daughter was trying this guy out. He belongs to a friend and is very unique in color! I beleive he is a dunalino. He has prominant dorsel and leg barring, but has a "mealy nose" and a SILVER mane with his tail leaning more towards his body color. Very bizzare. He lightens up considerably when he is shedded.. I will get pics and post them soon! In the meantime, you can see his spring color before shedding here... Almost looks chestnut in the body color.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_EtdFVuneQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; heres an old shot from a few summers ago: cant see his dun factor in this, but you can see his body color http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2797886990055698473uRWmfE

I don't see cream. He's either a flaxen red dun or just a flaxen chestnut with nice countershading.

grullagirl Fri, 05/08/2009 - 18:58

NOWAY on the countershading! lol.. His leg barring is very prominant.. and he does go waaaaay lighter in the summer.. I promise I will get pics this week!

Fledgesflight Sat, 05/09/2009 - 01:06

I think I see Cream in the second picture- I don't think he simply a Flaxen Chestnut (wrong shade imo).
so..Red Dun and Cream or Red Dun.

grullagirl Sat, 05/09/2009 - 10:01

AHA! I didnt know there WERE chestunut duns! that very well could be. Although he is quite yellow in the summer! His papers put him as a red dun. reg. name Jets King Bueno. I have never seen a horse like him in color. (He belongs to a friend.)
My other friend just recently bought a dunalino mare - they are boarded at the same place, so when I go pick up my daughter today I will stop by and take pics of them both. heres another pic from a few years ago:

I will make sure to get nice close up pics of his body color and dun factor today! Whatever he is, I think he is VERY interesting...

Six of one, half dozen of the other....chestnut dun and sorrel dun both fall under the classification: Red Dun.

Here is a link to a friend's website. Please click on "stallions" to see her Dun Palomino stallion, Matt. He *looks* red, not palomino. He has sired dun and cream foals from mares who carried no dun or cream and he has sired double dilutes from single (and a DD) dilute mares.
He does NOT look palomino. He looks "red". ...but his offspring don't lie.

I feel for you. It's like you could be my *twin*! I think I wake up blonde and gradually become more brunette as the day progresses...

rabbitsfizz Sat, 05/09/2009 - 14:19

Yes, I wake up Blonde, then I go back to sleep again Blonde....little wonder Alzheimers is setting in, really, I was a prime target!!!

That is the colour we associate with Red Dun in Europe, there are very few Red Duns without flaxen, and the ones that there are are often misidentified.
I have to admit I do prefer Red Dun with Flaxen , it is, to my mind at least, far more beautiful than many Palominos as it does not change colour so much, what you have at birth is pretty much the colour you will keep!!!

grullagirl Fri, 05/15/2009 - 10:50

that must be what he is then, but he is my FIRST one I've seen. I associate all red duns as RED bodied, mane, tail etc. I am going penning tomorrow where he is at, so will take pics!

Finally got around to getting pics, and I beleive you are all right and he is REALLY a red dun. I just have never seen one his color. Also took pics of my friends Dunalino... Or is she??? hahah

but those pics are of her dorsal and leg barring (the bottom pics)

hoofpick Sun, 05/31/2009 - 18:08

Me too...red dun gelding and dunalino mare....
Wish so much there was a dun test!!!!!! (not just the homozygosity one) My eyes are going crossed looking through the microsope and seeing definite differences between dun and any other color, but I need to know for sure!!!

rabbitsfizz Mon, 06/01/2009 - 02:54

HP I have a mare that I have always thought was Red Dun, very dark, with Flaxen, she also, I think has Sooty, but she is fifteen this year, has had a foal every year since she was three (accidental two year old breeding, BTW) and, with the exception of her three year old son who is also a ??? she has never had a Dun foal to a non-Dun stallion....are you still testing??
Her ??son is, I think, a very dark Black Dun, he has a dorsal even when clipped, but he is very dark....almost Black.

hoofpick Mon, 06/01/2009 - 17:56

Absolutely guys! Although you'll have to bear with me getting back to you-you have to keep pestering me!
First of all I do this for free as it is only a research project I do. Then go and pluck (pinch) some body hair from the neck, shoulder, ribs area and rump and put in a labled zip locked bag. Email me when you're ready to send and I'll give you the details.
ferralkidz@activ8.net.au
Remember it is not 100% (remembering Flights mare whos hair really wanted to tell me she was dun !~ )

accphotography Mon, 06/01/2009 - 19:52

I'll send you an email this week. I'm really curious what you might see in her hair regardless of dun. There's something odd about her.
