I like the second picture best.

Tell me do they always pony the racehorses to the start line in the US?

Yes they do pony all horses to the starting gate here. It's to prevent the horses from running off with the jockey in anticipation. It just makes it easier for the jockeys not to have to worry about it prior to the race.

The leather piece over the pony horse's shoulder is to protect him from the racehorse's biting (which they do quite a bit, asking to be let go).

Pamela I think they look pretty darn good. Your composition and timing were very good, especially for a first time. Some of them were slightly overexposed, however, you can darken them up a bit more in a good photo program (try GIMP).

I don't really believe the ISO was your problem. The shutter speed was. It is very difficult for an ISO to ever be too high. MP's idea of having you shoot in Av mode wasn't a bad idea. Manual mode is far better IMO as I'm often not a fan of the camera's opinion of exposure when it comes to racing (dark horses racing on a light surface, often with a light background). However, we've got to figure out why your camera isn't showing you where you are on the exposure scale. If you had been able to see that, you would have probably raised your shutter speed and they wouldn't have been overexposed.

I think they're really great for a first time (really great in general really). I'm sure you'll get better and better every time.

I just noticed your shutter speed on the first pic shown here (the gray in the paddock) was 1/200. That's a very slow shutter speed (ie the slower the shutter speed, the longer then shutter stays open, the more light comes in) in combination with an 800 ISO. I suspect a shutter speed of between 400-600 might have made the difference.

Thanks y'all!!

ACC, how can you tell that from the pic?? I don't remember it being that low as I thought I had it set to what you told me, but its possible!! lol

What I should I change to make the white on the jockey's clothes & the bridles in such NOT have a purplish hue around the edge??

Not finished editing as I had a bad headache yesterday. I've edited some more & get them uploaded sometime.

I need like a cinder block or something to stand on lol I was so bummed that rail was in the way in almost all the pics, but I just couldn't help it. :(

I just figured this out myself this week but when you open a photobucket picture, over on the left is something that says "Image info" if you click it it tells you everything about the camera
