I'm a foal aunt!

Forums

My friend's foal was born at 3:50 this morning. Her maiden mare did a wonderful job and I was not needed to assist at the foaling but she did call me to help get him nursing when he had still not really latched on by 7:30 this morning. By the time I rolled in at around 8 he was pretty much figuring it out so I just crouched on the other side of the mare and kind of squirted milk at him until he really knew where he needed to aim and then we stood back and let him have at it. The dam is a Dutch hunter mare and the sire is Contester, a Holsteiner dressage stallion. His young breeder (a college student) is a little disappointed not to get a filly but I think this colt is fantastic. Unfortunately she missed the foaling due to classes but her mom (my friend) was on hand to get it on video for her. She is rushing up here as soon as her last class is over this afternoon. That is indeed darker hair, not a poo stain! He is nameless so far...

Oh he's LOVELY!!! The dam is stunning as well.

I was already going to ask you if that was a Bend Or or poo.

You can trust us to come up with the only interesting bit of color on a plan bay foal! Yes, he is quite lovely and hopefully he will grow tall enough to be his owner/breeder's future dressage mount. I think she is nearly six feet tall now and all legs! The mare was her A circuit hunter mount through high school.
he's darling! That mare is beautiful!
Where's his umbilical cord?
You can see a bit of pink umbilical cord in the third photo down.

I'll pass on all the compliments to the mare's owners! This is the same woman who bred my Isabelle, by the way. (Dam of Solo.) Now her daughter is getting into it too and is currently in school to be a vet, specializing in reproductive medicine. I think she is still pre-vet... I can't remember what year.

Nice baby! Congrats aunt Sara! I am the 'godmother' to an icelandic of a friend of mine. Get regular updates and adorned her (the horse) with a new halter once. I love the foals dreamy eye in the 3rd pic. 8-)
