Re: Dun question...
Heres an example of the full points, even these are just barely

Jackie should get the full points as she gets older, but they may never be really dark like this
Re: Dun question...
Or she may be a Wild Bay Dun...or she may just not get the leg bars or face mask, it is not a prerequisite of Dun, except in America, of course.
I have seen quite a few Duns that do not have much more than a darker head (like a Roan) and legs and a dorsal stripe.
I had not even given it a passing thought until a few years a go, on here, someone starting trying to lay down the law about what a Dun was or was not!!!
Rabbit is a proven Dun, yet he does not have a face mask, or leg barring.
I have only ever bred one Bay Dun out of him and I cannot remember if she had leg bars, sorry, but none of the myriad Black Duns have had.
Re: Dun question...
is she a dunskin or a bay dun? she looks so cream, abnd very lovley to btw :love
That is the question!! lol
Some seem to think bay dun & I've some then dunskin.
Her mother is a Palomino & dad is a grullo.
The only way to know for certain is to test, which I'll do as soon as I have the extra $$$.
Thank you!!

Re: Dun question...
Just Bay Dun for me.
I do think that I can see something of an impression of stripes there on her front leg...?
I don't see any leg stripes-/barbs on the last horse pictured- though I've seen a few Bay Duns who didn't have real noticeable stripes (if at all) as say a Black Dun would usually have.
Re: Dun question...
And Cobwebbing, I forgot that!!!
I have never actually seen cobwebbing, except in a picture.......
It is interesting that Red Duns seem to not follow the trend, but does not explain the lack of leg bars, face mask or cobwebbing in my Black Duns (which is a supposedly primitive colour)
A few have actually had face masks, BTW, and I thinkI remember one had some barring on the leg, but not pronounced.
Re: Dun question...
Hi All -
Haven't been here in awhile. I wanted to add that we have alot of babies that have the dun gene - but are born either palomino or buckskin - sometimes you can see it - and sometimes it's so questionable until they shed out their yearling year. The only real way to know is to test - but it is expensive.
I just had my first double dilute foal - a colt - so in order to make sure I get his color right - I've sent off the hair for testing for dun zygosity, also for red. He has a hint of a dorsal but on dd's sometimes that's all you see. His sire only shows his in the summer.
The filly in this thread is one of those wait and see - but it's a pain to change colors with the AQHA, but can be done. She's a cute one.
Re: Dun question...
Hi -
We'll get photos soon - just can't seem to get things coordinated to do it. Alot of the babies are at another ranch - so it's finding the time, the right weather and all to go out and take photos.
I did get my double dilute colt though - YEAH!! He's a neat one.
Re: Dun question...
Ok...another question lol
Jackie is my 1st dun so I'm learnin as I go with her, but in "normal" (no cream) bay duns, do they shed this light or are they this light in these areas?? Or could this be cream?? I know...I'll have her tested, just waiting on the spare cash.

Re: Dun question...
I agree. If the rest of her sheds out the same color as her :booty cheeks, I may reconsider.
Well ACC her chest is shedding that light & so far the insides of her legs too.
I wish her back & barrel would shed, as it looks like she may have dapples.
Her dam gave birth yesterday to a buckskin colt. I'm wonderin if she passes on cream to all her foals?
Ok just checked AQHA...

The 1st 2 by Bullet are cream, & I highly suspect Jackie & well the newest 1 just born is buckskin.
At this point I think I'll just have to test to be certain.
Re: Dun question...
Can't say I've ever seen a black based dun not have leg bars.
