Colour question

I have a day old tobiano foal, she has a white mane and tail and white legs. The patches look more bay than chestnut, and she has darker brown ears. Genetically, bay should be impossible as she is out of a black tobiano mare by a grey born black stallion. Is it possible that the stallion wasn't actually black at birth but genetically another colour, just looked black? Parents were grey and buckskin. Mare is definitely jet black and white, and she was definitely only covered by the black/grey stallion. Any ideas? Thank you in advance

Pics please! We can help more with visual information. It is entirely possible that the stallion had agouti at birth and was written down as black when he wasn't. Gray makes horses darker at birth than they normally would due to initially increased melanin production. It can make palominos look bay or brown based during the graying process so it is definitely possible.
