Buckskin without Dark legs.
I know this was often mentioned on EC forum & alot of people seemed to assume that buckys always have dark legs. Not that unusual, but thought this pic was a good one to illustrate a buckskin with very pale legs. This is a 2 yo gelding, sire normal old bay, dam - cremello. Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

This is similar to a "wild bay" and I suspect with age this horses legs will get darker. They often do.

Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

I agree this is age related as opposed to wild bay.

Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

I am not sure it is age related, I think it is just him. I have bred heaps & heaps of buckys of all shades & never had one like this.
He was like this as a foal & will be 3 in september & his legs have never changed.
But I guess time will tell.

Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

Sorry, also meant to say, that his body darkened very noticeably from a very pale cream, almost white as a weanling, to a beautiful dappled gold this summer,
but still no change in his legs. The photo above is winter coat, so he is not quite so gold as he was.

I've seen some that didn't get their point until 4 or 5.

Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

LOL, perhaps we should take bets on whether his legs will darken or not.
I have found most of mine have had the chocolate legs rather than black.
But I have never had one that hasn't had marked points as a weanling/yearling.
There is always a first I guess.

I agree with CC, this horse is stunning and I don't see why it can't be wild bay related.

It could be, and it may be, however what little black there is does go all the way up to the normal area and given he's only 2, it's much more likely he's just not gotten his full points yet.

Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

CC, perhaps it is just the photo, but he has no black at all on his legs, definitely some darker areas but not black, but also some very pale areas as well.
He is actually 3 in September, & while I don't profess to be any expert at all on wild bay or any other type of bay, as I said earlier I have bred numerous
buckskin foals & he is the only one I have ever had like this.

But then again, someone also posted earlier that some of theirs have taken 4-5 years to darken in the legs.
So yes, just a waiting game.

Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

I am curious about the legs darkening on the Buckskins - I am still only a new student to the whole colour genetics so I am fascinated by that as I have a miniature buckskin colt (now 2) and he has black on his leg but its low on his legs and then fades up if you know what I mean and I actually wondered if maybe he had some kind of roaning going on.

This pic was taken end of August 08

This is one taken about a month ago in his winter woolies

Excuse the small size but this was taken about 2 wks ago. I will try to get some better pics but do you think he might have some sort of roaning going on and do you think his legs might darken (I hope so :D )

Sire looks like he might- see the inverted v's? (what were the parent's colours/patterns)
I don't think your boy has it though.

Is this true for duns as well??

As some I've seen have high black points others have very short black points.

Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

It's not as much the height as the shape.

Inverted v's are a trait of Classic Roan:

Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

Cool I definately didnt know that. My colt - you can definately see it in the first picture has that same type of marking on his back legs - not on the front though.

But also from what you can see do you think his legs will get more black higher up??

The inverted v's are not just for black legs- it's usually seen on any base colour of a Classic Roan and mostly on the front legs.

Banner- I don't know if your colt will get higher black on his front legs-time will tell.

Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

LOL, yep. He is as roan as they come. Produced plenty of roans, out of mares where classic roan is not a possibility!!!!
Just when he is losing his winter coat, he gets a sort of whitish look about his body for a short time, but other
than than that, golden buckskin.

Re: Buckskin without Dark legs.

That would probably explain why he doesn't have it- he's a minimal Classic.

Off to look at his foals-

Fledge,

You won't find any of his foals on that website. He has just been leased by the stud, so no babies on the ground for
them yet.

LOL, yes, he is so minimal, that his owner only figured out that he is roan because of his babies.

Yeah, lol I didn't find any. I wasn't doubting you- I wanted to see what the Roan was like on his foals- if they were minimum like him or fully expressed. It's not everyday that you get to see the un-obvious ones, and it's a chance to see what they produce.

Some of his foals are quite minimal, like him, but some others are very obvious.
Will see if I can find some pics for you.
