Bay roan?

This is the filly (Islands Shady Lady) I posted when she was born wondering if she were buckskin roan or bay roan. Majority said bay roan but would have to wait and see. Dam is black or very dark bay and Sire is buckskin roan. Before and after pics: [img]http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/giddyupminiacres/SahdyLady6days…] [img]http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/giddyupminiacres/ShadyLady6days…] [img]http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/giddyupminiacres/DSC00416.jpg[/…] Today, partially clipped at 3 months old: [img]http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/giddyupminiacres/DSC01932.jpg[/…] [img]http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/giddyupminiacres/DSC01931.jpg[/…] Her mane has A LOT of white mixed in too!

She looks bay roan, but because of her frosting in her tail/mane I wonder buckskin? Or do all roans have frosting? Having a brain fart... :booty

A lot of Roans do have frosting in the mane and tail, and she is obviously Bay Roan, although the clipped bits do not show this any more clearly as she would be the same colour if she was Buckskin!!
God I hate clipped foals....sorry!

I don't know. I am tempted to clip Ditto as it's so freaking hot out here and she's got that wooly foal coat. Poor girl sweats just standing still!

The coat protects them from the sun as much as it looks as if it is causing them to sweat...sweat is not always bad.
A couple of years ago we had a Summer that was freaky (for us) and temperatures over 100.....my foals sweated a bit, yes, I made sure they had constant access to clean water, I even showed the braver ones how to go into the river.....of course having a river is a blessing, but you can in fact get plastic paddling pools at Boot Sales really cheap and even big horses get fun out of splashing the water around.
I never, not once, even considered clipping my foals, it did not occur to me that it would be beneficial, and I ma convinced that it is not.
Remember that we have a tradition in Minis of skinning them out merely to make them look horse like, and there are now people that clip them on the day of their birth, I think mainly to avoid that awkward transition from fluffy foal to clipped weanling, and thus, once again, get more money for them.
I have no problem with taking the coat off yearlings...in a few weeks I shall rough clip my yearlings as Minis do hark back to their Shetland heritage, and do not shed out properly as yearlings , and the coat matts...I have a yearling colt who looks like a Puli!!!
But foals, no, never, let them be babies and chill out in the field.
I do not show them, either.
I used to show the Arab foals, maybe once in their foal hood, but at our shows the foals have to be with their mothers all the time, they do not go in the ring alone, so they are not too stressed.
Even so, there are no foals classes, per se, I showed the mare as a broodmare and the foal as her offspring, it is all very low key.
And I will not even do that now.
I actually think maybe even a yearling is too young to show.
We are in such a hurry, but, tell me, where are we going that we cannot take an extra year on the journey????
Oh, I'm getting old, I think :-s /:) i-)

oh my, does this go for Welshes as well? My coming yearlings look terrible even though everyone else is well into their spring shed. The colt is actually just looking like a plush toy pony but the Arab cross filly does indeed have mats hanging off her belly and between her legs. I thought I could just pull or groom them off but they are STUCK.

Yes, that well known cross between a Highland Cow and a Yak??
That look??
I clip with the hair, not against it, and just take off the Astrakhan rug bit and the summer coat grows through!!
I have also bough a set of "Covercote" blades for Rabbit they leave 5cm of coat on, Lister developed them specifically for Cushings and old horses....unfortunately they only fit Lister clippers!!!

You could try sheep shears......don't hit me I'm only little and I'm old!!!! :booty :laugh1 :rofl

Aww... I want to show Ditto at the SB Nationals in July. Not for any other reason except I'm proud of her and I want to see what people say about her. I doubt trotting mom and baby around the ring is going to cause her any damage and I would bet she'd enjoy the outing as she's just that type.
If she were the shy type I would hold off a bit.
