Bay?

Jenks Sat, 05/01/2010 - 20:07

Hmmm. I don't know....it looks a bit creamy. Cutie pa-tootie too...

rabbitsfizz Sun, 05/02/2010 - 08:48

I would say Bay, no cream, no seal.
Like this chap....

Curious, though, why would you think Seal or Smoky Seal when he looks Bay?

He is a very nice foal, though, and if it actually matters, testing is straightforward enough.

Marchadors Sun, 05/02/2010 - 09:33

I think he looks bay, no cream.

Danni Sun, 05/02/2010 - 15:37

I think he looks bay, a very cute darker bay!!! Does that make him have a bit of sooty? I'm lost on what brown is these days, but that doesn't look it to me?

He actually looks more like a bay going grey, yeh I know he can't be, but I just mean he has that look that the greys have with the extra black before they go grey. If that makes sense!

But anyway, yeh I reckon bay!

Jenks Sun, 05/02/2010 - 16:29

I guess it's the super light golden ears that say maybe cream to me.

Marchadors Sun, 05/02/2010 - 18:38

I had a black mare that had the very light creamy ear hair even lighter than this cute little tyke and many thought she definitely was smokey black. Tests came back, no cream, so I don't go by ear hair at all.

Danni Sun, 05/02/2010 - 19:00

Besides, if there was cream, it has to effect the red coat doesn't it?? So it wouldn't be red looking, like it does here??

dakotakdq Sun, 05/02/2010 - 19:03

he looks like a cute lil bay to me :D

supaspot60 Sun, 05/02/2010 - 19:14

Its so cute I just want to plant a big smackaroo kiss on its lips

Because he looks like a bay ADULT, not a bay FOAL. There are huge differences between the foal you posted and the OP foal.

Seals are usually born looking like adult bays. I (and ACC) have photos that show this. There is also a difference in Smoky Seal and Buckskin.

It's not the body color of the ear hair color that says cream... it's the blue eyes.

Sometimes cream doesn't show on a brown base coat and especially not on a foal.

Agreed smokey seal.

Fledgesflight Mon, 05/03/2010 - 03:36

Yep, Brown or Smokey Brown.

Does anyone know if non-Cream foals can have those coloured eyes?

rabbitsfizz Mon, 05/03/2010 - 09:45

OK, had another look but I still do not see anything that does not say Bay.
The eyes, yes, I can see they are pale and fading fast, I have had this quite often in foals (that is not to say I have not had an unidentified Brown foal, of course, that is possible)
The Bay colt I posted does not look the same colour, granted, but he had grey eyes at birth, like the foal posted (his eyes are not blue).
Also the posted foal has not evident nose muff and I thought that was supposed to be essential??

accphotography Mon, 05/03/2010 - 14:17

It's pretty essential on adults, but it's not essential on foals. I have never seen a truly bay foal born with black legs and a nearly black face... this is a brown thing.

GiddyUp Tue, 05/04/2010 - 07:29

Have not seen him in person yet but am told he may have some white hairs in his under coat.

Do roan foals have dark heads right off?
