babies!!!

Forums

omg, i'm excited! So i'm setting up a brackish tank for a future Green spotted puffer. in the mean time, to assist me in cycling, i bought a molly. Her name is Bulbasaur, because it was the first word to pop into my head. well, i've had that fish for a week or two, and she's been doing fine, loving her brackish water. It's about halfway where it needs to be, salinity wise. anyways, i looked over there today and noticed a flick of movement. I thought it looked like an ant at first, just something black and small. i went over to investigate.... and i have babies!!! Yay! Little walmart mollies, lol. there's a bunch of black ones, some orange and black, and one orange. Bulbasaur is orange with black spots, but most of the others that were in with her were very ugly, lol. I put a little bit of fake grass in there for them to hide in, and gave some extra food. She's a funny fish though. Right now, she's just swimming in circles around the heater, lol. the temp in the tank is right, she just likes the heater. anyways, i'm excited, i have some more fish. I have never had any baby fish but guppies before, lol. these are huge compared to those.

Congrats on your parenthood Krickette - Have you checked into one of those "baby bins" that sits in the tank near the top, but keeps bigger fish from reaching the babies? They are usually 4x6x6-inches and have tiny drilled holes in the hard plastic sides - that way the water can flow through for airation and sanitation, but babies can't get out until big enough to be safe from mommy & daddy - or the neighbors.

They also have net boxes too for the same purpose. Be sure to crush up some flakes to a powder and/or some egg yolk for the little ones if you plan to keep (or rehome) them.

Do you have a plan for feeding the puffer? Even the little ones need quite a bit of crunch to their diet to keep their dental plates from building up. You may need to start a snail tank if you haven't already.

i have a net box, but tbh i don't need as many fish as are in there, lol! they have lots of babygrass to hide in, so it seems most are still alive, lol.
