Appys with spots and dark legs
The horse I posted from the three musketeers movie, in the war horse topic, assuming that's make-up I was curious would it possible to create that look in real life? I think I've seen spotted horses before with dark legs?? Do Knabstuppers ever have dark legs? I mean if you could get the dark leg look, I guess you'd breed in a bit of freisian or something for the feather. The base horse in the picture looks kind of like a Knabstrupper? Anyone have pictures of spotted horses with dark legs? Here's the horse again for reference. IMAGE(http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/750/spottyhorse3musketeers.jpg)

Re: Appys with spots and dark legs

I know some near leopards can have dark legs but they aren't so dramatically solid.

You can see the near leopard further down this page has some pretty dark legs but he also has "lightning marks" down the pasterns

Oh that's cool! Why is he a near leopard, instead of a leopard?

Re: Appys with spots and dark legs

Near leopard is just the term used for horses who are genetically leopard (noes to toes white with spots) but they have their pattern slightly suppressed from fully taking over their entire body, hence the darker legs and often darker faces. So they are 'near' leopard in their appearance ("not quite leopard" doesn't roll off the tongue as well :P). Same with near fewspots.

Re: Appys with spots and dark legs

As I mentioned in the other thread, our bay leopard mare gives the appearance of having socks because her spots are so close together, you really can't see the white unless right up close.

A leopard (or near leopard, if you prefer) can have dark legs, but they usually have dark manes and tails as well. This is my old gal, Trixie.

Re: Appys with spots and dark legs

I am loving that mane with the black streak. :)

I think the movie painted the horses lower legs to help hide the feather extensions. Caddy Shack had a jumping stand in for a big feathered draft horse. It was pretty obviously a non draft horse double with a painted on blaze, tied tail and fake feathers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCCmbQlc5c8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Oh that's cool too, pity the appy patterns are so hard to produce exactly what you want!

Re: Appys with spots and dark legs

The Appaloosa with the dark legs is not a natural Appaloosa color. The legs have been spray painted black for effect. Note the right front leg and the spot above the knee. It is easy to see the spray.

I see horses in several breeds that allow spraying especially gray horses.

Yeh I realise the legs are movie magic ;) I was just wondering if it was possible to re-create it naturally!

He looks like a Noriker.

look at the leg color of these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvEIAFfaiIM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (esp at 0:42)

Also, Norikers originate from alpine regions of Austria and Germany, and isn't that near where the movie is being filmed? Would make more sense than an App cross all the way over there!

Oh that's interesting! Although the horse in the movie seems more of a light horse compared to the Norikers?

This one seems a bit heavy, although the markings and feather seem pretty much what the movie horse is!

Re: Appys with spots and dark legs

My guess is perhaps they based is on the Noriker but used a lighter breed in the movie for the "fancy" look... Breeds making sense in the movies don't always happen. lol

Re: Appys with spots and dark legs

I just meant it seems silly to import all these horses and noriker and noriker crosses would be more common locally than appy crosses. Looking at Google images some seem lighter than others.

Oh, plenty of apps (ApHC apps) in that neck of the woods. Think the ApHC European championship show is held in Germany.

Oh he's really neat, if he legs were a bit furrier he would be a mini version of the original (fake) OP horse.

Oh Rodeo I like that one! :)
Those black legs, I love them on an appy.

I know he is cool isn't he? I have never seen one with solid dark legs like that usually they are spotted as well.
And I love that the tail is dark too.

That is fun though, we did find some examples that are at least similiar to the OP horse.
