Any appy in this AQHA?

Does this horse trace to any known appaloosa "cropouts" or "mistakes" or what have you? http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/chazman" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not that I can see on the Allbreed pedigree, but I didn't go back to look in the waaay back. Is this one I need to bring up to my historian friend? Any pix?

I'm not sure it's worth troubling him/her.

I don't have pics but I can likely get them.

I can't find any *obvious* mottling, but I haven't looked super close (I will). He has strange sclera that is oddly reminiscent of the type I've seen on Apps (unlike the kind Lace has somehow).

But the thing that caught my attention... he has two socks with ermines (and large stripes under the ermines) and two legs with no white whatsoever. On these two solid feet he has BRIGHT blonde feet with very apparent stripes. I mean they stand out from FAR, FAR away they're so obvious. They look alot like the photo below, except that his have far more blonde than dark (hence what caught my attention waaaaaay across the yard from him):

I've seen alot of interesting feet in my life... but none like this. :? :?:

Thoughts?

horse is listed as brown, is he seal or is it possible a smoky black? Other thing I was wondering is maybe age related?

accphotography Mon, 09/28/2009 - 14:01

I'll have to get pics. It's almost a "you have to see it to believe it" they're so blonde.

I don't see any cream in his pedigree and he definitely looks bay/brown.

You think age could cause depigmentation of the hooves?

WhyNot-Ponys Wed, 09/30/2009 - 00:11

No -- I never saw a depigmentation of hooves because of age ---- but I have seen striped hooves often with sabinos.

lillith Wed, 09/30/2009 - 04:57

yup, have seen blacks and bays with one or two white socks with blonde hooves underneith, and the black legs having blonde/striped hooves.

I know several of our older mares have striped hooves, though most of them are chestnut the two bays have it as well.
He does have a line of Appaloosas in his pedigree through Cuadroon.
But I believe Wapiti is the only offspring of hers that showed any appaloosa colouring. I have sent a request for info on Quadrangle to my historian friend.

I'm not familiar with Quadrangle, so I'll be interested to hear what your friend says.

My old ApHC broodmare (now deceased) went back to Cuadroon. Her maternal grandsire was Quadroon, a bay (I believe) Appaloosa with a spotted blanket. He was sired by Mr. Quadroon (ApHC) out of Peavy's D'Athena (AQHA). Mr. Quadroon was sired by an AQHA stallion named Exterminator out of Cuadroon. She was registered AQHA but was in reality a varnish roan Appaloosa.

From what my historian friend says about Quadrangle:
I've seen Quadrangle's name on a few pedigrees. He would have been bred by Mike and Mary (Peavy) Stees of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. They are both gone but their daughter, Marsha Witte, is still living. Marsha's husband Randy ran Western Horseman magazine...if I ever get over to see them, I will ask her about Quadrangle. I have never heard that he had any Appaloosa characteristics. Cuadroon had one other Appaloosa that I know of...Mr. Quadroon (by Exterminator AQHA); he had a small blanket but sired Quadroon, who was louder colored than Wapiti. Quadroon sired Peavy's Cajun Queen who was one of the two or three greatest mares I ever saw and I saw her a lot.
I remember Peavy's Cajun Queen -- she was a great mare!

If Quadrangle had no Appaloosa characteristics, it's unlikely that Chazman has LP. I don't see any other Appaloosa lines in his pedigree.

accphotography Wed, 10/07/2009 - 14:38

How could anyone know for sure he was genetically non characteristic? This was almost 50 years ago and we all know how minimal they can be.

NZ Appaloosas Thu, 10/08/2009 - 03:01

You look at descendents of the horse...the person who provides me with the information was, and is, highly involved in the stock breed horse world, and for more years than most of us have been alive, most likely.
