This is the FIRST of this color to come from all of her horses. On the forum here, everybody keeps saying this dam and others related to her look to carry cream or silver or both. Would you say this filly proves the cream then?
Looks Grullo to me, no Cream.
For her to be grullo, she would have to have dun, correct? So far on this forum we have determined none of her horses were dun even though this stud and this mare both have a faint dorsal stripe.....SHE NEEDS TO START TESTING!! :BH

I think she looks black... Probably smokey black because of the eyes. She doesn't have the gold color of a buckskin and look how dark she is around her eyes. I would have said grulla as well but looking at the parents, dun doesn't seem to be there.

Mini foals buckskin doesn't look like big horse foals buckskin. This mini is 100% buckskin with no question IMO.

This is a definite buckskin:

That foal isn't even as similar to others of theirs I've seen. They took their '08 foals down or I could show you lots that looked identical to this foal.

Strangely enough I am quite aware what Mini colours look like at birth....after thirty years I think I am [possibly over qualified at this?????
She still looks Grullo to me, so instead of it proving there is Cream present, this would prove there was Dun present, why is this so hard to believe???
I don't actually think Mini colours do look different, BTW, I have never thought that, I have a Bay foal who does, actually, look Bay.....I think the rest is myth coloured by hype!! ;)

Myth coloured by hype and wrapped in mysteryyyyyyy!

I froze my butt off last night, accidentally fell asleep for way longer than I should have, but this was the first post I read this morning and it made me laugh.

I can't remember if there is a test for dun? I may be VERY interested in this filly so will probably have her tested at my cost and include testing for cream for sure. Sure would help solve a lot of the mystery with her horses!

There is a dun test offered by UC davis but it is a test for markers rather that the actual dun mutation. I'm not sure if minis are one of the breeds they are offering to test you'll have to check with them. Tests for agouti and cream would tell us for sure if she buckskin or not. If she tests as having agouti and cream then buckskin if she tests as black E? aa then you know she is black or grullo that that should be more evident as she matures.

They test for everything... but dun. And they take 3 months.

I'd use Animal Genetics and test for cream, agouti and silver if you want. If you're curious enough send a sample to Davis for dun too.

dakotakdq Fri, 04/24/2009 - 22:43

is that any colour or just dun? I need to send some samples away for a dun mare I used to own (getting a foal from her by a buckskin with red gene, bugger), I know shes not homo for dun but she is by a bay dun x bay so id like to know if shes homo for black/agouti.
