Black-ish mare

I know it's hard to tell by visual and it's not a great pic but what do you think? brown, fading black, or smokey? Sire: Palomino Dam: Seal/Dark Bay

I agree, she looks either faded black or smokey black. I lean towards smokey black. Her legs are what makes me think smokey black, they (well to my eye) look diluted more so than faded.

Ok, well, as of this afternoon: she is mine. :rofl :bounce :love I'll get her shipped over Saturday if the transporter is available.
In person she's sort of all over chocolate color, legs and all. Similar to my first horse, but his belly went more buff color in the summer. Her ear fluff is kinda light, isn't that suposed to be an indicator of smokey black?

She's 3 years old, sweet, smart, very pleasant and WAY prettier in person. She's had a bit of training but not overworked, just perfect really. She's light and likes riding and just about ready to get out of the round pen. Super balance even with the slick footing today.

check out pedigree!

Oh, I need barn name ideas! Aparently the breeders were calling her Nikky? but he was calling her "brown mare"....cowboys....lol
Edit: I might call her Iris (she was the greek goddess of the rainbow)

Hmm, maybe she is. In person though her nose is about the same as the rest of her and her legs are light. Her dam (in the pictures) is definitly brown though so easily possible. I'll get a BUNCH of pics when I get her Saturday

I'm completely thrilled. I spent the last week looking at horses and was getting pretty discouraged. Everyone wanted $3500 for frumpy grade ponies that would bring about $500 on the mainland. ~x( One of them was suposed to be 3/4 arab, the sire and "dam" were very typy and the colt looked pretty much like a foot dragging short ponyish QH with just a dash of Arab. Hmmm ymwhisle And their definition of green broke was that it can be lounged and has been sat on once. The other was a grade mare several years older and several inches shorter than advertized, rode nice but bites anything within range. :-t Then this girl showed up on Craigslist as "make offer", I was almost embarassed to call since I only had $2000, but he was really nice and only countered 500 more, which I was able to scrape together. He paid a lot more for her in California and had her shipped over last year, then realized he was overhorsed (with all good horses). I just feel really really lucky...

I would have prefered a gelding and she hasn't got a white hair on her, but I think I can live with that. :rofl

I'm not so sure that she is brown. She looks awful dark in the foal photos and browns are usually a bit more noticeable as foals. It may just be that lighting or camera in that one pic. If there were more pics than just the 3 I missed them.

Wow she sounds awesome can't wait to see the pics.

She's still wet in those photos and I see a brown muzzle. Normally they ARE born a bit lighter than that, but I have seen several that weren't.

And you know, a nice dark brown mare will stand out in any field - no matter whether it is full of chestnuts, sorrels or red bays.

Gah! Change of plans threw me completely off and I forgot the camera! :hammer
Crappy cell phone pics only. :( At least they show a bit of her coloring. After a full day with her she looks sort of like a black "super fader", she's black under her mane and sort of fried everywhere else. Rather deja vu though since she looks exactly as my first horse did at this time of year. :-? Now I want to see if she turns into a buckskin in winter like he did. If I wasn't completely broke I'd have her tested.:bounce No lightnes on her muzzle so I don't think she's seal. Actually she looks quite similar to my hair right now. Dark ash brown with highlights from a combination of old hair dye, pool chlorine, and sun. :rofl

And she is a complete doll! I found all her itchy spots and she stands perfectly still for grooming and hoof cleaning. Barely phased at being loaded and moved. Later on we were doing some cleanup, I was keeping V busy (she's a pest) while mom dragged a few branches to the brush pile and Iris followed her back and forth watching everything but never got in the way. She's like a calmer version of Sissy (the spunky smarts black tobiano mare I used to ride). Even has similar quirks (skittish of fly spray and enjoys splashing in the water bucket every few minutes). I'm in love already.

Oh, good, my dad's phone took better color.
(In case you're wondering, that's a small mesh hay net with the end tied off with twine instead of the drawstring. The horses go crazy over them and it saves a ton of hay from being stepped on and peed on lol. Even better is the one with a laundry basket inside, it's rollable! :HB )

Morgan Sun, 04/17/2011 - 04:01

Ok, I went and looked at the smokey blacks in the gallery, I think that's what I'm going with till I test :) I'm going to condition her hair and I have a white fly sheet I'm going to put on her to keep her cooler and it should help keep some of the red out. Try to make her pseudo grulla. :love

FINALLY good pics!
As for Venus...she is clearly the underdog and not taking it well lol. She was pestering Iris to no end yesterday. Unfortunatly Iris seems to know Karate and bowled her over onto her back (legs all sticking up like a dead cartoon) with a single effortless kick to the middle. And V is a good 200 lb heavier. @-)

Morgan Wed, 05/04/2011 - 22:54

Yep, that's him. I thought of palomino too but as far as I know they are born palomino and get darker as they age? she was born black. Going by the condition of her hair she seems seriously fried.

Billygoatsgruff Thu, 05/05/2011 - 03:19

I mean she could have been born a "darker" palomino? As she aged she could have just darkened more from sooty?

Hes just plain palomino: http://www.morgancolors.com/springtownc…

kind of like a dark black chestnut. for some reason she just doesn't look the right colour for smokey black.

Then again its also 1am here, so when I wake up she'll probably look like a smokey black again, and I'll be eating my words for breakfast XD.

Shes adorable though!

Daylene Alford Thu, 05/05/2011 - 06:42

I'm gonna go with very faded black no cream just to be different. Are you testing her?

I really like her btw.
