chocolate palomino?

hi i dont often have an unusual color to post but not sure about this one she is a miniature horse - dam is bay, sire is black the best way to describe her is to say it looks like the color of hot chocolate and at the moment she has started to get dapples on her rump. any ideas? Looks more Silver Black than Pally- though could be the lighting.

What color were the grandparents on the sires side?

CMhorses Mon, 06/29/2009 - 18:02

I would agree with the black silver. Unless the sire is a smokey black, palomino is impossible. Do you have pictures of the parents?

and on the other note, both parents being black based one of them should show the silver as well.
That looks like a fresh body clip, it's possible to be a flaxen liver chestnut showing skin color through (though it does look a heck of a lot like a black silver).

Hey Joanne , looks like youve dropped lucky if shes silver !
nice mare what ever her colour :love

I agree with black silver although I have no clue how that could have happened. I think it's time for:

any unclipped pics or a picture of the tail dock? (if there is a point of body hairs left unclipped that I think I see.

vneerland Mon, 06/29/2009 - 22:30

Horse? Is there a horse in front of the city wall? :?
(keep trying to look behind her, admiring the old stucture. Call me crazy)
Nice color. I'll take a cool half dozen just like that. 8-)

I agree... Remember how the flaxen chestnut turned paly when clipped...
I'd love to see more pictures of her. She has a nice head. A noble look almost.

unclipped - winter coat

[img]http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k7/mo…]

[img]http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k7/mo…]

her dam is the bay (that you can see all of in 2nd pic) and beside her is a sorrel with flaxen mane and tail, so definately not even close to sorrel.

she has tested negative for silver, champagne and pearl, when the sun shines there is a gold shimmer to her coat and
her hooves are a fudge colour.

you can see dam better in next one - definately bay, sire true black

[img]http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k7/mo…]

she then turned a peachy colour

[img]http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k7/mo…]

so what else could it be ???????????

She as in the Dam? Also she could still be a smokey black instead of a bay.
Heres a picture of a smokey black that could pass as a bay that I grabbed from another post.

Do you have any other pictures of the Dam? Possibly in a summer coat. Even the sire could be hiding cream, but imo the dam seems more likely based on her color.

Mushroom!!! :laugh1

again

I was skeptical a few years ago but I'm starting to think there really is such a thing?

accphotography Tue, 06/30/2009 - 13:33

It's official, she's mushroom. Absolutely classic of it in phenotype, and better yet she's negative for all the other genes that could have caused the phenotype without her being mushroom... mushroom it is.

supaspot60 Tue, 06/30/2009 - 17:27

yes they did test as chestnut .There is at least one mushroom stallion in Ireland , I know because my friend owned it for a while

CMhorses Tue, 06/30/2009 - 18:46

So for people that don't know what mushroom is, it is some modifier that effects only chestnut based horses.

accphotography Tue, 06/30/2009 - 19:45

It appears to be a new (well, semi new) red modifier:
http://www.kellas-stud.co.uk/mystery.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It doesn't dilute, and if anything darkens the color. But it doesn't darken like liver would, it appears to take the red out completely and make the horse look black based (black silver to be specific). It's very odd.

Morgan Tue, 06/30/2009 - 22:59

send hair to hoofpick!!!

(oh, we should make another picture next to DNA guy and the scape goat of a hoofpick  )

Dilutes Wed, 07/01/2009 - 01:08

After reading all the previous threads, I think most likely mushroom or possibly choc pally. Do choc pallys generally have such clean coloured flaxen? I would have expected a bit of sootiness in the mane and tail.

If it is mushroom, gosh it does mimick black silver very well! I wonder if they'll find this modifer in bigger horses.

rabbitsfizz Wed, 07/01/2009 - 05:02

Trust me she isn't Palomino.
Mushroom throws Chestnut most of the time, it seems a bit random, so I look on it as an interesting nuisance.
Maybe if we could dissect it genetically a bit more.?
Anyway it is fairly common in proper Shetlands, and, at the moment, has only been identified in them.
I wish they had though of a bit better name for it, though.

Morgan Wed, 07/01/2009 - 09:52

Well, the name can allways be changed, what was it they were calling Pearl at first? Peachy or something? :laugh1

CheyAut Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:10

WOW! I would've bet money she was a silver!!! Of course, I've heard the term mushroom but didn't know anything about it... but just, WOW! LOL

NZ Appaloosas Fri, 07/03/2009 - 23:03
Apricot. :rofl
Depends...with the Iberian breeders, it was always pearl. What was going on with the Barlink horses was thought to be something different than pearl, and there was a problem with calling it "barlink" (legalities, IIRC), and so they were going to call it "apricot", but then they discovered that the Barlink horses were actually genetically pearl.

rabbitsfizz Sat, 07/04/2009 - 01:37

Well, I always called it "Lavender" before anyone decided to investigate it....there was one stud that had it almost endemic, I think possibly H/Z...no-one was interested in my knowledge of the colour when they suddenly "discovered" it which made me very wary of everything that this person now says...she really did get quite cross when I argued a few points....it seems when someone has something "rare" they really REALLY do not like having it pointed out that it is not, in fact "rare" but has been around for donkeys years!!!
She seems very nice otherwise :laugh1
